Keith Rowe

Keith Rowe, born 16 March 1940 in Plymouth (England), is an English free improvisation tabletop guitar. Rowe was a founder of the influential AMM in mid-1960s as well as M.I.M.E.O. Rowe is a relative celebrity and has maintained a busy touring and recording schedule since the late 1990s. Erstwhile Records has released many of his most recent recordings, making him a legend in electronicacousticimprovisation (EAI). Rowe started his jazz career in the 1960s, notably playing with Mike Westbrook or Lou Gare. Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, and Wes Montgomery were his early influences. Rowe eventually grew tired with the limitations of the form. Rowe started to experiment, slowly but surely. To Westbrook’s dismay, Rowe made a New Year’s resolution not to tune his guitar. This was an important step. Rowe began to explore free jazz and free improvisation. He eventually abandoned the traditional guitar technique. From www.acart.org.uk
