Lars-göran Ulander

Swedish Free Jazz Saxophonist, was born on 8 June 1943. Lars-Goran Ulander, a Swedish altoist, plays free jazz, despite being influenced by Art Pepper. His tone is distinct (sounding a bit like Eric Dolphy but not the big interval jumps), and his ideas are stimulating. He interacts well with drummer Paal Nilssen Love and Palle Danielsson on these intense, free improvisations. Although Charles Mingus’ “What Love”, and Ulander’s “J.C. Drops”, initially have some structure, they quickly become lengthy jams for the trio. The musicians’ talents are evident in the fact that the five long performances remain interesting and creative, without being sung by a vamp or using a familiar melody. Ulander, who recorded since 1963, but has not held a record date prior to this one, deserves much greater recognition. Allmusic
