Liberty Ellman

Liberty Ellman is a guitarist whose improvisational and interpretive skills, combined with his unique rhythmic touch have allowed him to play in the jazz groups of Henry Threadgill and Wadada LeoSmith, Myra Melford and Rudresh Mahanthappa. Ellman has also performed with standout vocalists like Jen Chapin, Somi, Ellisi and others. Ellman is a bandleader and composer who has released three critically acclaimed CDs, Orthodoxy (Red Giant Records), Tactiles(Pi Recordings), and Ophiuchus Butterfly. Gary Giddins described his compositional style as “At the same time highly controlled and recklessly imaginative,” and “quite unique and subtle.” Ben Ratliff, New York Times’ editor, wrote that Ellman’s ballads were “special, exotic things” and that their melodies are unforgettable.
