Marvin “smitty” Smith

Marvin “Smitty”, Smith is a prolific drummer who is always in demand. His sensitive and authoritative playing can be heard on many sessions. He was a Berklee student once before. He played in Jon Hendricks’ band in New York in the early 1980s. He then worked with Bobby Watson, John Hicks and Slide Hampton. Smith recorded later with Archie Shepp and a quintet led by Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and others. As well as sessions with Hamiett Bluiett and Kevin Eubanks and David Murray, Smith also played with Ray Brown and Dave Holland. Hank Jones and the Jazztet were also among his collaborators. Smith recorded his debut album as a leader in 1987. He also recorded the year with Sonny Rollins, and toured with Sting. Smith has been a regular guest on sessions and is often paired up with Ray Drummond. There are several Concord dates for Smith, and he can be heard on many other releases by other musicians. These range from mainstream and bop to M-Base and even post-bop. Allmusic
