Matt White

Matt White is a composer, trumpeter, and educator who currently resides in Myrtle Beach (SC), where he is Assistant Professor at Coastal Carolina University. Matt White was an educator, freelance musician, and songwriter in South Florida and Nashville from 2004 to 2012. He appeared on numerous recordings and supported many artists and groups. He was the featured soloist in the Nashville Jazz Orchestra and Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He has been featured on radio broadcasts such as The Country Music Christmas Television Special, The Mavericks’ In Time PBS Special and the Grand Ole Opry. Matt was awarded the Downbeat Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Soloist and Best Arrangement. He also won the Best Original Song category. He was invited to represent the United States at the International Association of Schools of Jazz conference, Lucern, Switzerland in 2009. In 2004, he also participated in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead residency. His work has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, The Washington Post, as well as various other musical publications. Matt’s dissertation on Visualization in Jazz Improvisation was published in 2011. It was the first academic study to examine the links between visual imagery and jazz improvisation. On The Super Villain Jazz Blog, he still writes about the subject (including interviews with musicians). Matt’s first album, The Super Villain Jazz Band, was released on Artists Recording Collective in 2013.
