Michael Carvin is an extraordinary drummer with incredible talent, creativity and technique. He is able to adapt to any situation musically and can pass his knowledge on to an increasing number of students around the world. Carvin was born in Houston, Texas. He began his musical training at six years old with his father, a Houston drummer. Carvin started playing professionally at the age of twelve and won the first of five consecutive Texas state rudimental championships. His varied career includes two years as a Motown Records staff drummer and extensive studio and TV work on the West Coast. After joining Freddie Hubbard’s 1973 band, Mr. Carvin made the move to New York where he quickly established himself as one of jazz’s most powerful drummers. The Mosaic Records/Jazz Icons DVD, which features Carvin and Hubbard in their first tour group, is a prime example of his collaboration with Hubbard. Carvin has extensive playing and recording experience, including with Dizzy Gillespie and Dexter Gordon as well as his own bands. Michael Carvin is a respected drummer teacher and clinician.
