Mihály Borbély

Mihaly Borbely studied jazz saxophone and classical clarinet at Bela Bartok Conservatory. He has been a specialist in unusual wind instruments, such as tarogato, folk flutes and fujara. He was one of the founders of Vujicsics Folk Group. He also participates as a leader and soloist in various contemporary music, jazz, and world music groups, such as the Mihaly Borbely Quartet and the Balkan Jazz Project. He also plays in various line-ups, including the Binder-Borbely Duo and Eastern Boundary Quartet, Attila Laszlo Quartet, Kalman Olah Sextet, Kalman Olah Sextet, and Attila Laszlo Quintet. He has been a part of numerous recordings and has given concerts throughout Europe, the USA and Australia. Since 1979, he has been actively involved in the education of young jazz musicians. Since 1986, he has been a teacher in Bela Bartok Conservatory and since 1990 at the Jazz Department at Ferenc Liszt Music Academy. He was the department’s head from 1997 to 2000. He has given lectures and led courses at many places in Hungary and abroad.
