Mike Phillips, a Mount Vernon native, became interested in music as a child. He tried many instruments before finally settling on the saxophone. He was 16 years old when he decided to become a professional musician. In 1993, he made his New York debut at Wilson’s New York nightclub. This led to several sideman and session jobs in jazz.
