Mingus Dynasty, an American jazz group, was formed shortly after Charles Mingus’ death in 1979. It featured many musicians Mingus played or recorded with. Mingus Dynasty’s 1959 album was the inspiration for the name of this group. The group grew to a big-band format in 1988. Since 1991, the Mingus Big Band has been residing weekly in New York City. There are currently three Mingus repertory bands: Mingus Dynasty and Mingus Big Band, as well as the Mingus Orchestra. They all travel extensively around the world.
