Like many others, Trumpeter Mutt carey started his career in New Orleans’ marching bands around 1913. He was also a member of the Crescent City Orchestra, which his brother Jack led. He toured with the T.O.B.A. in 1914, and played with Kid Ory. vaudeville circuit in 1917. Carey returned to New Orleans in 1918 and then moved to California to join Ory the year after. He was the trumpet player on “Spike’s Seven Pods of Pepper Orchestra”, the first Jazz record released by African-Americans in New Orleans. After Ory left Chicago in 1925, Carey took control of the band and renamed it the Jeffersonians. He also worked for the Hollywood film studios. Carey rejoined Kid Ory’s Creole Orchestra in 1944, then left again in 1947 to form his own band which he called Mutt Carey and his New Yorkers which recorded in in November of 1947 and played some gigs until Carey’s death in September of 1948. from http://www.redhotjazz.com
