Nicki Parrott, a bassist and singer, was born in Newcastle (New South Wales), Australia. Parrott began her musical journey studying piano and flute, before switching to double bass to join her sister’s band. Parrott attended the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, Sydney. She quickly began touring Australia and playing in professional bands. She took lessons from Ray Brown and John Clayton whenever she could. Parrott received an Arts Council of Australia grant in 1994 to study with Rufus Reid. In 2000, Parrott became a regular at Les Paul’s Monday-night session at Iridium Jazz Club. Paul encouraged Parrott’s vocal talent and she has since become a talented singer and award-winning composer. She’s recorded several albums herself and appeared on numerous records by other artists. Parrott is also a member of Broadway’s ensembles, including Avenue Q, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown and Imaginary Friends. She has also appeared on the soundtracks to Summer of ’42 and Jekyll and Hyde. This episode of Piano Jazz features Nicki Parrott’s swinging vocals as well as her upright bass playing on a set that is dominated by standards. Parrott, fresh from her lunchtime gig in St. Patrick’s Cathedral’s Cathedral, joins Jon Weber as she performs Peggy Lee’s “Fever” – a song that places both the singer and the bass line at the forefront. Parrott’s clear, yet eloquent voice shines again in “I Love the Way You’re Breaking My Heart.” From www.npr.org
