Notilus is a new project by five French musicians that combines cinematic soundscapes with jazzy energy and live electronica. The quintet has performed at many French festivals and now presents its debut album, s/t via Denovali for spring 2017. The well-constructed repertoire ranges from sax and trombone driven jazz pieces with a deep sense of sophisticated melodies to quieter, more melancholic soundscapes back, to beat driven, dynamic sound cascades. The albums can sometimes feel like a soundtrack to a 1970s crime movie. Other times it sounds like an intergalactic retro-futuristic journey. But, the album always has an ironic and optimistic view of the creative process. The five musicians, Notilus, embark on a journey to the center of the Earth, towards pentaquarks and towards the icy peaks of Pluto. The spatiotemporal ship made stops on the planets Jazz and Trap, 70 s, Bass, Dark, Dark, and Psyche. In ten timeless and diverse pieces, Notilus’ infectious smile is captured.
