What happens when a classical piano player (Paulo Mesquita), who is passionate about jazz and free improvisation, joins forces with a drummer (Pedro Oliveira), who is a pop musician with a particular interest in electro-acoustic experimentation. This is what you hear on the amazing debut CD of OZO. This music is not a simple cross of their previous careers. It has no connection with Mesquita and Oliveira’s expertise in the language and processes Samuel Barber’s composer. It is something completely different and defies all labelling attempts. The rhythm is the main focus, although it can sometimes sound like The Bad Plus, it’s still jazz. Although the pieces are structured according to the song format, harmony is the most important element. The narrative development and permanent dramatization are all connected to Erik Satie, the Impressionists, but this creative universe is only possible today. So what is it?
