Patrick Williams

Patrick Williams is a prolific and accomplished composer in today’s music industry. He has composed music for more than 65 feature films, 100 television series, 19 albums, and 30 concert works. He has won four Emmy Awards with 22 nominations and two Grammy Awards with 21 nominations. Two of his most recent releases, “Home Suite Home”, have earned him two Grammy nominations. He has been nominated both for the Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize in Music. He has been awarded the Richard Kirk Award by BMI and the Golden Score Award of the American Society of Music Composers. Williams was born in Missouri and grew up in Connecticut, where he received a history degree from Duke University. However, music was his first love and he studied music composition and conducting at Columbia University. His first love was music. He became a New York arranger and moved to California in 1968 to pursue a career in film and television. An American Concerto, featuring a jazz quartet with symphony, was his most acclaimed composition. He also received a 1977 Pullitzer prize nomination for it. Gulliver, which featured a symphony orchestra with an narrator and received a Grammy nomination. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the College of the Fine Arts, Williams has completed Ziji with Edgar Zendejas as choreographer. He received two Grammy nominations in 2006 for Elevation, which he co-produced with Tom Scott, Eddie Daniels, and won an Emmy for “A Dream That Only I Can Understand” from Yesterday’s Children. He received an Emmy nomination in 2002 for his score to “We Were The Mulvaneys”, and a Grammy nomination from “The Theme from Blonde”, the soundtrack album for the TV miniseries Blonde. This was a Marilyn Monroe portrait. The Emmy was won by Williams for his mini-series, “Jewels” in 1992. Williams has composed and orchestrated themes and scores for television shows such as The Streets of San Francisco and Lou Grant. He also arranged music for The Days and Nights of Molly Dod. The latest television projects include Hercules starring Sean Astin; The Perfect Husband; The Laci Peterson Story; When Angels Come To Town and Finding John Christmas starring Peter Falk. Power and Beauty, James Patterson’s First to Die, Power and Beauty, The Three Stooges, with Michael Chiklis and A cooler climate starring Sally Field and Judy Davis. Among the 65 films Williams has directed, a few are Breaking Away for which he was nominated for an Oscar in 1978; All of Me, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Finding John Christmas starring Peter Falk; James Patterson’s First to Die; Power and Beauty; The Thin Blue Lie; The Three Stooges with Michael Chiklis, Swing Shift. Williams is also an accomplished arranger, with many credits. For Ella, featuring Patti Austin, was co-produced and arranged by Williams. It was nominated in 2003 for the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Frank Sinatra chose him to be his Musical Director/ Arranger/ Conductor for his last studio recordings, Duets and Duets II. He has orchestrated recordings for Jack Jones, Michael Buble and Natalie Cole. Williams is a pioneer in music education, having held positions as Visiting Professor and composer in residence at the University of Utah, and the University of Colorado. He was awarded an Honorary Doctoral degree. He has lectured and performed at numerous colleges, including Berkeley College of Music and Cornell University. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Duke University in May 2001.
