Pete Canter

Pete Canter is a jazz saxophonist who has won numerous awards and is a prolific composer of jazz and new music. His jazz repertoire includes hardbop, latin jazz and bebop. He is also fondly influenced by his own compositions that combine elements of folk, contemporary jazz and classical music. After a brief stint in Wales in the 1990s, Pete moved to the Southwest in 2001. He is a top saxophone player, composer, and band leader who has been instrumental in a variety of innovative jazz projects. Pete Canter’s Sky Ensemble, which combines contemporary jazz, Latin and folk influences, features flute, strings, and a rhythm section. He composes for his own jazz ensembles and larger ensembles that include jazz and classical instruments, as well as writing for contemporary music ensembles. Pete has recorded many well-received jazz albums and has performed at major U.K. festivals such as Cheltenham Jazz Festival (Thirtmouth Jazz Festival), Bude Jazz Festival (Bude Jazz Festival) and Exeter Vibraphonic Festival (Exeter Vibraphonic Festival). He has supported Polar Bear, Kyle Eastwood, and he has also played with Christian Brewer, Harry Beckett, and many others. Pete is a double bass player in small-band jazz settings and has also been a bass player with an orchestra. The Bridge Jazz Club is a popular monthly jazz club at Exeter Phoenix, and Pete hosts it.
