Pheeroan Aklaff

Pheeroan AkLaff is a versatile drummer, who has been mostly associated with the avantgarde. He has performed with some of jazz’s most adventurous musicians over the past two decades. He first played with Jay Hoggard (1975), and then with Leo Smith’s New Dalta Ohkri in New Haven, CT. akLaff also has a long-standing association with Oliver Lake, an altoist (including his work with Jump Up), and has worked with Henry Threadgill’s Sextet. New Air, where he replaced Steve McCall during Air’s last two recordings in 1983-1986), George Adams (where he recorded Air’s final couple of recordings), Cecil Taylor, James Newton, Cecil Taylor, Myra Melford, and Sonny Sharrock. akLaff has been a Gramavision leader (an obscure EP in 1983), and Mu (1989).
