Quiet Sun, which was originally a Dulwich College group called Pooh and Ostrich Feather in 1970, was founded after MacCormick made friends with Robert Wyatt (the son of a friend of MacCormick’s mother). The band incorporated jazz elements and bright keyboard sounds into complex music, similar to Soft Machine. However Manzanera’s energetic guitarist made their music different from the Softs who used only reeds and bass guitars on their regular albums prior to 1975’s Bundles. Quiet Sun was disbanded in 1972. Manzanera moved to Roxy Music and MacCormick to Matching Mole. Hayward became This Heat’s lead singer. Jarrett also began teaching mathematics. Manzanera booked a studio to record Diamond Head in 1975. He also got Quiet Sun to record another album using their old material. Mainstream, which was critically acclaimed, became the New Musical Express’ Album of the Month. Under the name “Team Spirit”, one of Quiet Sun songs is featured on Robert Wyatt’s Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard. Reworked versions of “Rongwrong”, “Mummy was an asteroid and Daddy was a small, non-stick kitchen utensil”, appear on the album 801Live (the latter is consolidated by a Diamond Head track, “East of Echo”, giving the result “East of Asteroid”.
