The radio.string.quartet.vienna is a “non-classical” string quartet based in Vienna. Their arrangements and compositions are known for incorporating a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, classical and folk music. They have no artistic affiliation to any radio station, despite their name. With its adaption of music from the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the quartet was one the most important discoveries at the Berlin Jazz Festival 2006. John McLaughlin wrote their liner notes: ….” I was immediately struck by how this group had ‘appropriated my music’ and made it their own. Even the atmosphere that was there all those years ago is still present. Another thing that struck me deeply was their commitment to improvisation !….. This is not your average string quartet. They are devoted to their instruments with a love and passion that is extraordinary. The fact that they took electric jazz-fusion music and fused it with classical music training is remarkable. This programm was recorded by the group at the Traumzeit Festival 2008. In 2008 they released “Radiotree ” with the accordion/bandoneon-player Klaus Paier. This is their only album that they didn’t compose or arrange themselves. Ulf Wakenius’ 2008 release “Love is real” featured them as guests. This album is dedicated to the Esbjorn Svensson Troo (e.s.t.). The quartet recorded “Calling You” in 2009 with Rigmor Gustafsson (Swedish singer).
