“Gullah,” a West African word, means “a people blessed with God.” “Ranky Tanky,” which loosely translates to “Work It” or “Get Funky!” This Charleston, SC-based quintet plays timeless music from Gullah culture that was born in the southeastern Sea Island area of the United States. The musical roots of Charleston, SC have a variety of styles. They range from playful song songs to exhilarating shouts, to heartbreaking spirituals and delicate lullabies. These artists are thankful to be able to grow from them. Quentin Baxter and Charlton Singleton are South Carolina natives. They formed a legendary Charleston jazz quartet in 1998 after they graduated from University. These accomplished musicians, who have been separated for years and have a better understanding of their home, have reunited again to form a “Heartland of American Music”, a group that was born in their own backyards. THE BAND Quentin E. Baxter, (Drums), is a Grammy-nominated musician/producer currently touring with Freddy Cole u0026 Rene Marie. He is a prominent figure in Charleston’s jazz community and the Charleston Jazz Initiative’s Co-Principal. He also serves as a founding member of Jazz Artists of Charleston and an Adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at College of Charleston. www.baxtermusic.com _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Kevin Hamilton (Bass) is a celebrated artist in Charleston’s vibrant jazz scene. He has performed with many ensembles, including The Charleston Jazz Orchestra and Houston Person. Gregory Hines and Rene Marie are some of his international credits. Kevin Hamilton joined U.S. Dept. Kevin Hamilton joined the U.S. Dept. of State’s OneBeat Program in 2012. He holds a degree from College of Charleston in music theory, composition and music theory. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Quiana Parler (Vocalist) has one of the most sought after voices in the South Carolina Low-Country and has graced some of the most prestigious stages in the nation. Clay Aiken discovered her through a top placement on “American Idol”, and she has been touring the country for seven years with Clay. Quiana has performed alongside Kelly Clarkson, RubenStudard, Miranda Lambert, and worked with producers David Foster and Adam Anders. She also appeared on the national television shows The View and Good Morning America. She is currently based in Charleston, SC and performs nationally with her party band “Quiana Parler”.
