This is previously unreleased material by the quartet of trumpeter Earl Cross and saxophonist Idris Akkamoor, bassist Rashied al Akbar and drummer Muhammad Ali. They performed live in The Netherlands in 1980 for five smoking examples free jazz. Although the recordings are not perfect, the playing is excellent, with some impressive soloing by all four players. The room was clearly captivated by their playing. All 4 players respond with intense solos and great enthusiasm. Although the tune’s heads often harken back a bit to bop, they are balanced more in an AACM style. From www.soundohm.com
