New Orleans’ brass band, The Rebirth Brass Band, is called. The group was formed by Philip Frazier (tuba/sousaphone player), Keith Frazier (bass drummer) and Kermit Ruffins (trumpeter). Other members of the school’s marching band were also from Joseph S. Clark Senior high School in New Orleans’ Treme neighbourhood. In 1984, the band released their first album on Arhoolie Records. A series of Rounder Records releases in 1989 brought more attention to the group. Rebirth is well-known for its blend of traditional New Orleans brass bands music with jazz, soul, and hip hop. After Ruffins refused to travel with the band to Africa in 1993, Ruffins and Rebirth broke up. Later, Ruffins formed his own band, The Barbecue Swingers. Rebirth’s Tuesday night gig at Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street, Carrollton in Uptown New Orleans has been a pillar of the New Orleans music scene and has served as an introduction to the city’s nightlife to many newcomers. They regularly tour North America and Europe. Basin Street Records released Rebirth of New Orleans in 2011, which reached number one on the CMJ Jazz charts. The album earned them a 2012 Grammy Award as Best Regional Roots Music Album. From Wikipedia
