Quinerly was raised in a musical family, where he was surrounded by musicians as diverse as Robert Glasper, Jason Moran, and Mike Moreno. (Freedmantown also featured pianist Gerald Clayton and saxophonist Tim Warfield). Quinerly said that all three attended Houston’s High School of the Performing and Visual Arts where the teachers were “incredibly dedicated.” They gave us a great start. After graduating from high school, he moved to the East Coast to attend the Mannes School of Music, New School University. There he was able to learn with three of the most respected drummers in the world: Lewis Nash and Jimmy Cobb. After a while honing his skills on the stage, he returned to school to earn his Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at Juilliard School. He is a “conscientious jazz drummer with an approachable style” (Nate Chinen of the New York Times). He has performed with many top artists such as Joe Lovano and Wynton Marsalis, Greg Osby, Greg Osby, and Christian McBride. He played and lectured with Marcus Strickland, the saxophonist. He also collaborates regularly with Enoch Smith Jr., the talented pianist and vocalist who was also on Quinerly’s original project. He has traveled to many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. He has given masterclasses at Tulane University (New Orleans), The Cultural Arts Center of Galicia in Spain, and has been an educator since 2012. Since 2012, he has developed and implemented music curriculum for School #7, an inner-city school district of Paterson. Through the music fundamentals of rhythm melody harmony, harmony, songwriting, and rhythm, this program teaches children how to work together. The program is now in partnership with Little Kids Rock and provides instruction in percussion and guitar, bass and piano, as well as voice. from www.reggiequinerly.com
