Roman Filiu, a New York-based saxophonist and bandleader, has been a composer, saxophonist and bandleader for more than 20 years. He was born and raised in Santiago de Cuba and has performed, recorded and toured around the world with many artists. He is currently a member Henry Threadgill’s Ensemble Double up and 14 or 15 Kestre: Agg. He also leads many groups, including Quarteria which features David Virelles and Ralph Alessi, Dayna Stephens and Yusnier Sanchez. The Roman Filiu Quartet includes Billy Hart, David Virelles and Thomas Morgan. Roman is a member of Chucho Valdes’Irakere (Grammy Award nominee Babalu Aye and Grammy Award winner New Conceptions), and has also played with outstanding musicians like Dani Prieto and Steve Coleman. He has received the Jazz Gallery Commission Series and Langnau Jazz Fest Artist In Residence. His work with small ensembles has made him a well-known and innovative composer. He has also written pieces for solo piano, string quartet and saxophone quartet.
