Rorschach, or Antiduo’s offshoot or expansion, was founded a decade ago in the Netherlands by Seppe Gebruers and Erik Vermeulen, a teacher/student duo. Antiduo (el NEGOCITO Record, 2013) was formed from recordings they made between 2010 and 2012. It contains 18 instant compositions for 2 pianos. These compositions explore the space between composition and improvisation in a playful yet unpredictable way. Rorschach added Eric Thielemans to the group, as well as Marek Patrman, two drummers. This not only makes it difficult to get the impressions you want, but also creates remarkable results. These four individuals are all able to defy conventions. Erik Vermeulen is a Belgian pianist who has been renowned for his unique style. He alternates between jazz tradition and his own take, between traditional ensembles or unusual side steps. He is best known for his collaboration with Ben Sluijs. However, he continues to build on this relationship by playing a prominent role as a piano teacher. Seppe Gebruers quickly rose to be one of the most innovative voices of his generation. Seppe Gebruers was one of the founding members of Ifa y Xango, where he created music for theater and film, and experimented with quarter tone pianos. He also co-founded Troika, a non-profit organization. He has been involved in several international improvisation units. This includes a highly acclaimed trio with Hugo Antunes, and Paul Lovens. Marek Patrman, who moved from the Czech Republic in the mid-nineties to Belgium, quickly became a key player in the experimental wing. While working with Ben Sluijs, Erik Vermeulen and Manolo Cadbras, he was a regular in progressive jazz ensembles. He has recently joined Lynn Cassiers’ Imaginary Band. Eric Thielemans started out focusing on jazz ensembles. But he shifted to projects that were in the middle of experimentation and improvisation. Thielemans is a performer who avoids conventions. He believes that improvisation should not be considered a genre but rather a learning process. He has been involved with a.o.
