Rose Royce

The nine-piece Los Angeles group, which mixed disco, funk and soul, was formed by Garner and Garner. They were both preparing to graduate high school and considering their future careers. Dunn and Moore joined them, and they decided to pursue the music business as Total Concept Unlimited (later Magic Wand). They auditioned to Edwin Starr and were hired as his backup band. Starr was a key figure in their interaction with many music industry professionals. Norman Whitfield, a Motown producer, was one of them. Whitfield became more involved with the group over time by hiring the group for recording sessions. The group also collaborated with Yvonne Fair and the Undisputed Truth. Whitfield was an influence on the Temptations. Whitfield was able to oversee the production of the group’s debut album. It took a few years for them to get used to it. MCA Records was also looking for a soundtrack artist to Car Wash. Whitfield convinced them that the band was capable of the task. Whitfield’s original material for the group’s first album was used as the soundtrack’s material. The soundtrack and the movie Car Wash were huge hits and helped Rose Royce to gain national recognition. The soundtrack was released in late 1976 and featured three Billboard R.
