Sachal Vasandani

Sachal Vasandani, an American jazz singer, is Sachal Vasandani. Vasandani is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He has released three albums with Mack Avenue Records: Eyes Wide Open in 2007, Eyes Wide Open 2009, and Hi-Fly 2011. He was born in Chicago and won Down Beat magazine’s Collegiate Jazz Vocalist Award in 1999. Wynton Marsalis has been his collaborator with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. His debut album, Eyes Wide Open led to tours and opening for jazz trumpeter Chris Botti as well as pop singer Joan Osborne. Vasandani’s 2009 album, We Move, was selected as a New York Times Critic’s Pick. Nate Chinen, a New York Times reviewer, called Vasandani a “jazz singer with good ideas” and gave some insight into what a jazz singer could be. The Boston Globe reviewed Vasandani in Eyes Wide Open. It stated that Vasandani was “mature in sound, rich in texture, but also has enough youthful angst to counter the foggy thinking that male vocalists often fall into.” Vasandani has performed internationally.
