The title of Scrapbook, the septet project by Angus Bayley, a London-based pianist/composer, reflects his unique approach to music. Bayley says that although he began his academic piano studies in his youth, he was more interested in transcription and experimentation. This interest was fueled by Richard Fairhurst, his tutor, and other influential people like Huw Warren, Kit Downes, and Tom Cawley. All this happened while he was pursuing a PhD in materials physics after his time at Imperial College London. Bayley’s creativity is inextricably linked to jazz and its culture. However, Bayley does not place any emphasis on subgenres or genres. Instead, he gathers melodies and chords that might have the potential to say something new. The self-titled debut album is a rich tapestry of folky, storytelling, and chamber jazz. from www.londonjazznews.com
