Cassity holds the Bachelor of Music degree from New School University, and the Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, respectively. She draws on the discipline and polish of her conservatory training in order to enhance her “beautiful and highly-personal tone” (Benny Green). “…this altoist is positively Bird-like.” (Jazziz Magazine). Cassity is a charismatic leader who has charmed Manhattan’s notoriously discerning audiences at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and NBC’s Rainbow Room. Cassity has performed as a sideman in many bands, including the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars, Jimmy Heath and Roy Hargrove, and small groups like Harry Whitaker and Ingrid Jensen. Cassity, a skilled woodwind specialist, is frequently called upon to play clarinet, flute (alto flute), piccolo, as well as soprano tenor and baritone, saxophones if necessary. Her versatility has earned her concerts at the Playboy Jazz Festival and Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival as well as the Hannover [Germany] Jazz Festival. Sharel Cassity, who is currently based in New York City and originally hails from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Cassity is a dedicated educator. Her private studio is now in its eighth year.
