The transnational quartet combines poetry with improvised, all-improvised sound textures. Mike Ladd (vocalist and hip-hop artist) is the poet. He worked with Vijay Iyer, pianist, on the staged projects In What Language, Still Life with Commentator, and Still Life with Commentator (Pi), 2004 and 2007. Carol Robinson, clarinetist, has recorded music by experimental composers such as Morton Feldman, Giacinto Scelsi and Luigi Nono. Robinson also uses vintage synthesizers. Ladd also contributes spoken word. The quartet is completed by Dirk Rothbrust (drummer), who plays mostly new music and David Randall (guitarist), who has recorded with many popular acts such as Faithless and Neneh Cherry.
