Sofia Rei

Sofia Rei, a Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer, is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and passionate vocalists in the New York music scene. Her music explores the connections between South American folklore and jazz, flamenco, and electronic sounds. Sofia is originally from Buenos Aires in Argentina. Her music is full of rhythmic complexity and a melodic purity which uplifts as well as haunts. Her collaborations include artists like John Zorn (currently, with Mycale, the Song Project), Maria Schneider and Bobby McFerrin. She also has a Grammy Nomination with Guillermo Klein, Myra Melford and Pedrito Martinez. Berklee College of Music, and the New England Conservatory are also her faculties. Sofia’s second album, Sube Azul won her an Independent Music Award. She returns with De Tierra y Oro (“Of Earth and Gold”), a spellbinding release. The album is described as a collection of “philosophical wanderings”, which includes songs that draw heavily on South American folkloric influences, bracingly contemporary sounds, and Rei’s powerful voice. The textures range from contemporary to traditional, with layered vocals, effects-treated vocals to electric guitars, loops, drum machines, and Paraguayan harps to Bolivian charangos to Paraguayan harps to Colombian marimbas to Argentine bombos to Peruvian cajones. Rei shares stories that reflect her varied travels and experiences. The album won two independent Music Awards in World Beat for Best Album and Best Song 2013. It has been featured on CNN and NPR’s Tiny Desk, WNYC Soundcheck, The New York Times, and many other media outlets. Her music has taken her to many venues and festivals around the globe, including Carnegie Hall. Blue Note, Kennedy Center. Montreal Jazz Festival. Vancouver Jazz Festival. Cite de la Musique. Festival Iberoamericano de las Artes de Puerto Rico. North Sea Jazz. The Barbican. Panama World Music. Festival Internacional del Cajon. With a bold new vision for the global music scene, she continues to be an individual. from http://sofiamusic.com
