Sonny Phillips

Sonny Phillips, born December 7, 1936 in Mobile, Alabama, is an American jazz keyboardist. Although his primary instrument was the electric organ, he also played the piano quite a bit. Phillips started playing the jazz organ when he heard Jimmy Smith play it in his twenties. Ahmad Jamal was his teacher and he played with Lou Donaldson and other jazz organists in the 1960s, 1970s, including Eddie Harris, Houston Person and Nicky Hill. In 1969, he released his debut album. He released many more records as a leader and died in 1980 after a long battle with cancer. After this, he went into semi-retirement and moved to Los Angeles.
