The traditional quartet Sophisticated Lady is rooted in jazz’s sounds, styles, and history. This quartet is a mixture of original compositions as well as new interpretations of the classic repertoire. It has an aesthetic and sound that is both familiar yet new. The musicians formed Sophisticated Lady during their USC graduate studies. It was a good thing, because it led to a recording session with Yarlung Records, an arts/audiophile label. The session took place at USC’s Brain and Creativity Institute in the new Camilleri Hall. It was a throwback session to simpler recording techniques of yesteryear, but with all the benefits of modern technology. The session yielded enough material for two forthcoming releases (Fall 2014).
