It’s not surprising that Soup was the first meeting between Otomo Yoshihide and Bill Laswell, given their respective reputations. They form an ad-hoc power trio with Yoshihide longtime associate Yasuhiro Yoshigaki. They offer four tunes that feature a lot of Laswell’s slippery bass, and Yoshihide’s feedback guitar (turntables only briefly). The songs range from slow jams to almost ambient and are all painted in dark tones, with some dub sounds appearing towards the end. Although the playing is good and the recording is great, Laswell and Yoshihide make some amazing sounds with their instruments. However, it is hard to believe that this recording was not recorded at all. Allmusic
