The Monk tribute band Sphere recorded an album of Monk tunes on the exact day Thelonious Monk passed away (February 17, 1982). It was comprised of Charlie Rouse, Kenny Barron and Buster Williams. Although Sphere was initially a tribute band it performed originals as well as jazz standards throughout its existence. After Rouse’s death, the quartet recorded music for Elektra Musician and Red. Sphere was reformed in 1998 with Gary Bartz, the saxophonist, taking Rouse’s place. They released their self-titled return LP that year. Allmusic
