Spring Heel Jack

Spring Heel Jack, an English electronic music band, is composed of John Coxon (the founder) and Ashley Wales (the leader). Wales was an ancestor of serious music and influenced much of the duo’s work. The duo’s first three drum-and-bas albums, which were released in the 1990s, received positive reviews for their innovative take on the genre. They have been collaborating with free improvisers from Europe and the United States to produce three albums for Thirsty Ear’s Blue Series, which features cross-genre endeavors. Evan Parker and Tim Berne were among the collaborators, as well as trumpeters Roy Campbell and Kenny Wheeler, Wadada Lee Smith, Wadada LeoSmith, Wadada Leo Smith, and trombonist Paul Rutherford. Matthew Shipp, pianist Matthew Shipp, and drummer Han Bennink are also included. Coxon and Wales started Treader Records in 2006, releasing CDs themselves as well as other artists like Mark Sanders, John Tchicai and Eddie Prevost.
