Stackpole, a sporadic free-jazz group that was active from 1998 to 2001, featured guitarist Dennis Rea and alto saxophonist Wally Shoup as well as acoustic bassist Geoff Harper and Northwest drummer legend Gregg Keplinger. Stackpole’s completely improvised music ranged in eerie, hovering sonorities, hurtling freebop, and hurricane-force sonic gales. This is as heard on their eponymous CD, which was released on the First World Music label. Stackpole was the winner of Earshot Jazz’s Golden Ear Award for best Northwest “Outside Jazz” group of 2001. from
