STEPHEN ANDERSON is a composer and pianist. His works have been performed by the West Point Military Academy Band and the Dallas Chamber Orchestra. The Crested Butte Chamber Orchestra and UNC Symphony Orchestra, Carolina Choir and Chamber Orchestra. Montclair State Wind Symphony and UNC Wind Ensemble. The West Point Jazz Knights, North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra. The One O’Clock Lab Band and Two O’clock Lab Band band bands, North Carolina Central University Percussion Ensemble. UNC-Charlotte Percussion Ensemble. Anderson was awarded two Barlow Endowment awards. The most recent was a commission to write a piano concerto, for Steven Harlos (pianist at the Dallas Symphony), which was premiered by UNC Symphony Orchestra in April 2010. It was also a commission for the West Point Military Academy Band in 2005. Chapman Foundation Teaching Award (2014), nominated to the Board of Governors Teaching Award (2014), honorable mention from the International Society of Basses composition contest (2002), Junior Faculty Development Award -UNC Committee on Faculty Research (2008), United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, UNC Research Council, United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, Endeavors magazine feature (2008), reviews in All about Jazz, Jazz Times, Jazz Times (2008), and PAS Percussive notes (February 2009). Anderson is a Summit Records recording artist as a pianist. His trio CDs Forget Not (2008) and Nation Degeneration (2010) received 4 1/2 stars (out 5) from All Music Guide. Forget Not was nominated for best jazz “Debut CD” (3rd annual Village Voice Jazz Critics Poll 2008). Nation Degeneration was chosen to represent Summit Records in the 53rd Grammy Awards under the category “Best Jazz Instrumental album”. Believe (2013) represented Summit Records at 56th Annual Grammy Awards. All three recordings were widely played on radio nationwide. Anderson previously performed as a pianist with the Lynn Seaton Trio. He was also featured on two recordings by Nagel Heyer Records: Puttin’ On The Ritz (2006) and Ballads (2006). Anderson was a pianist with the North Texas One O’clock Lab Band in 2001 and 2002, respectively. He also won the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival’s piano competition in 1997. In 1996, Anderson was the keyboardist for Kevin Sharp, a gold-recording country artist (1996-1997). Anderson is currently Associate Professor at North Carolina State University at Chapel Hill in Jazz Studies u0026 Composition. He holds a D.M.A. from the University of North Texas (2005-2006). He studied composition at UNT with Cindy McTee and Joseph Klein. He also worked alongside Phil Winsor and Murray Boren.
