Steve Carrington

Steve Carrington was born and raised in East Baltimore. His musical talent and love for jazz were immediately recognized. He enrolled in Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore as a teenager. This school has a rich musical history that includes alumni like Eubie Blake and Cab Calloway. Carrington was a Douglass student and showed a love and commitment for jazz from an early age. Carrington furthered his musical development at the Baltimore School for the Arts. After graduating, he was granted a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, Boston. There he studied composition, jazz theory, and performance with Bill Pierce, the saxophonist/teacher. After graduating from Berklee in 1989, Carrington moved to New York, where he performed with the Charles Mingus Epitaph and other musicians, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, Milt hinton, Dizzy Giillespie, and many others. He was a regular at the New York club scene, including venues like the Blue Note, VisioneAEs, Time CafT and VisioneAEs. Carrington changed his mind in the mid-ae90s and returned to New York to direct the Jazz Mentoring Program at Eubie Blake Center of Cultural Arts, Frederick Douglass High School, and Coppin State College. Carrington played with Phillip Harper and Theodros Avery as well as Grady Tate, Cyrus Chestnut, and Grady Tate during his time as a jazz educator. Carrington was featured by Chestnut on Earth Stories, his third Atlantic Records release. Carrington now focuses his energy as the leader of his own band. Carrington has performed in a variety of formats, including trio and quintet. He has also opened for such giants as Abbey Lincoln, Lionel Hampton and Stanley Turrentine. SeasonAEs Change is Carrington’s first CD as a leader. Carrington is also part of Modern Concept and is featured soloist on the Thad Wilson Big Band’s just-released album. from http://www.kennedy-center.org
