Steve Williamson is a distinctive saxophone voice in British jazz. Steve Williamson began his career with the reggae band Misty In Roots. He was a founding member of The Jazz Warriors and joined Courtney Pine and Andy Sheppard in the London jazz scene in mid-80s. He quickly established himself and was offered a record deal with the legendary Verve label. In 1991, he released Waltz for Grace, his first album. It featured Abbey Lincoln as a guest vocalist. Waltz For Grace showed an artist who was sensitive, traditional and truly original with jazz at the heart of his music. There were two more albums, as well as collaborations with Archie Shepp and Donald Byrd. Although funk, hip-hop, and reggae are important influences, it is the strong presence of Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and the explorations by Steve Coleman that drives Steve’s innovative and creative approach to jazz creation. Steve has influenced many artists, including Anthony Tidd, Robert Mitchell, and Soweto Kinch, the celebrated alto saxophonist. from https://worldheartbeat.org
