Surrender To The Air

Trey Anastasio, Phish, led Surrender To the Air, a free jazz group that featured Marshall Allen, Damon Choice and Michael Ray of Sun Ra Orchestra, John Medeski and Marc Ribot, Oteil Burbridge and Jon Fishman among others. In April 1996, the group performed two concerts at New York Arts Academy. They disbanded soon after. Like the group’s single album, these concerts featured entirely improvised music. Anastasio stated in interviews that the group was based on Sun Ra’s mid-twentieth-century free jazz ensembles. Anastasio stated, “A lot of time, I think that he was the pinnacle.” He was as good and as reliable as it got. His values were unchanging throughout his life and that is something to be proud of.
