Terri Lyne Carrington was born in 1965 in Medford in Massachusetts. She is a drummer, composer, producer, and clinician. After a 20-year touring career with legends like Wayne Shorter and Stan Getz, Al Jarreau (Stan Getz), Stan Getz, David Sanborn and Joe Sample, Cassandra Wilson and Clark Terry, Dianne REEVES, she returned to her hometown to be a professor at Berklee College of Music. In 2003, Terri Lyne was awarded an honorary doctorate by Berklee College of Music. Terri Lyne arrived in New York in 1983 after completing her Berklee studies under full scholarship. Her mentor Jack DeJohnette encouraged her. She was an in-demand musician for five years, performing with James Moody and Lester Bowie. She moved to Los Angeles in the late 1980s, becoming the house drummer for Arsenio Hall Show. In late 1990s, she was again the drummer on VIBE, a late-night TV show hosted by Sinbad. Ms. Carrington’s 1989 debut CD, Real Life Story, was nominated for a GRAMMY(r). It featured Carlos Santana Jr., Grover Washington, Dianne Reeves. Wayne Shorter, Wayne Shorter. Gerald Albright, John Scofield and Robert Irving III. Greg Osby, Don Alias, Hiram Bullock, and Greg Osby. 2002’s Jazz is a Spirit features Herbie Hancock and Terence Blanchard, Wallace Roney and Terence Blanchard. 2004’s Structure features Greg Osby, Jimmy Haslip, and Greg Osby. The CDs were released by the Europe-based ACT Music label and received a lot of media attention and praise in Japan and Europe. Peabo Britton, Gino Vannelli and Siedah Garrett were among the artists she collaborated with to produce notable songs. Terri Lyne was a part of many recordings from the ’80s to the ’90s. Herbie Hancock’s GRAMMY(r), Award-winning CD Gershwin’s World is a notable example of her work. She performed alongside Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and others. Over the past 10 years, she has toured with all of Mr. Hancock’s musical configurations (electrical to acoustic). She is also featured on his Future2Future DVD. Terri Lyne, who had been absent from the U.S. music scene for a while as a solo artist recording, returned to the U.S. in 2008 with More To Say… (Real Life Story : NextGen). In her nearly 20-year-plus professional career, she performs with colleagues and friends. An impressive ensemble of jazz and contemporary jazz musicians join Carrington’s More to Say. They include Everette Harp and Kirk Whalum, Jimmy Haslip and Greg Phillingaines. Christian McBride and Danilo Perez. Tineke Postma and Ray Fuller. Les McCann also makes an appearance. Terri Lyne also collaborates with Nancy Wilson, a highly acclaimed singer, for “Imagine This”. Terry Lyne’s fifth album, The Mosaic Project is released in July 2011. It is her first record on Concord Jazz. Her new album gathers many voices and creates a multi-faceted, richly layered whole. The 14-song album features many of the most important female jazz musicians of the past few decades, including Esperanza Spalding and Dianne Reeves as well as Dee Dee Bridgewater and Sheila E.
