The Blackbyrds were a rhythm and blues and jazz funk fusion band that was founded in Washington, D.C., in 1973. Donald Byrd, a trumpeter, led the group. He also included some Howard University students, Keith Killgo (vocals), Joe Hall (bass guitar), Allan Barnes, Allan Barnes (saxophone and clarinet), Barney Perry (guitar). Jay Jones (flute and saxophone), Orville Saunders, (guitar) were also later members. In 1973, they signed to Fantasy Records. Their 1975 hit, “Walking in Rhythm”, was nominated for a Grammy. Groups such as Eric B and De La Soul have sampled their 1975 song, “Rock Creek Park”, from the City Life album many times.
