The Funkees

The Funkees was an afro-rock band that was formed in Nigeria in late 1960s. They arrived in London in 1973, and quickly rose to prominence in the West African and West Indian music scenes. However, they disintegrated four years later. They were known for their funky, upbeat, danceable afrorock. Many lyrics were sung in Igbo as well as English. They were an army band that formed after the Nigerian Civil War. Their music helped to create a positive response to the darkening civil war. Soundway Records released a compilation of their recordings dating back to the mid-70s in 2012. This led to renewed interest in the band.
