The Thing is a Norwegian/Swedish Jazz band that includes Mats Gustafsson (saxophones), Ingebrigt Halker Flaten (double basse) and Paal Nilssen Love (drums). The trio formed in February 2000, during concerts in Stockholm. Also, a recording of Don Cherry compositions was released by Crazy Wisdom/Universal in Sweden. Their repertoire combines American, British, and German traditions of free music. Later, it was compiled from many sources, including Frank Lowe and James Blood Ulmer. McPhee was also an active musician on the 2001 album “She Knows …””. Otomo Yoshihide (Ken Vandermark), Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Jeb Bishop, and Thurston Moore are some of the other guests that have joined Thing for recording or performances. In 2004, “Garage” was published on the Smalltown Superjazzz record label. In 2005, a CD of live material was released with Joe McPhee u0026 Cato Salsa Experience. Also, a live album was also released. Action Jazz was also released on Smalltown Superjazz in 2006. This group includes original material as well as material by Ornette Coleman and Lightning Bolt.
