The Underflow is a new trio consisting of Mats Gustafsson, Rob Mazurek, and David Grubbs (electric guitarist). Corbett vs. Dempsey will release their self-titled album in fall 2019. It was recorded at Underflow, a record store/performance venue in Athens. Gustafsson and Mazurek have all played together and are part of a vast, interconnected network of collaborators. However, John Corbett suggested that they form a trio for two nights in Athens during the summer 2019. There is a story to this: Mats Gustafsson, originally from Sweden was a constant, vital presence in Chicago during the time when Mazurek, Grubbs, and others were making their mark. Gastr del Sol’s track “The Seasons Reverse” is a result of Rob Mazurek’s cornet. Grubbs, Gustafsson and Mazurek released two duo albums (Apertura u0026 Off-Road) in 1999 and 2003. They have been waiting for many years to get back on the stage. The Underflow is a quick glimpse of the trio’s ability to hit their stride. They range widely and strangely with complete self-possession, as they weave between a dense frontline, Gustafsson’s explosive baritone sax and lapidary fluteophone; Grubbs’s crystallized, athematic guitar voice; and Mazurek’s all-bets off improvisatory wildness, including on sampler and vocal. This recording, while satisfying, is just a glimpse of what the trio has in store for them as they plan their first tour in 2020. From Mats Gustafsson Website
