Thebabaorchestra

TheBABAorchestra, a Los Angeles-based experimental big band of 17 musicians, is led by Lauren Elizabeth Baba, composer and conductor. “Baba is an artist worth watching… she’s establishing new territory.” (Downbeat). “Baba’s music is described by JAZZIZ as “ambitious, wildly imaginative new music…a statement of remarkable depth and cinematic expanse.” You will find subtly creeping rock grooves, massive brass textures, and intricately woven melodies. This is creative music that draws from avant-garde and drone-rock as well as Middle Eastern folk and free jazz. Baba is a rising star in the female music industry as a bandleader and composer for big bands. Highlights include album reviews in Downbeat Magazine and JAZZIZ Magazine as well as LA Weekly, All About Jazz. Bird is the Worm is also featured on KUCI’s March 2018 Indie Life Feature. Radio/podcast features are also available with Trilogy, Somethin’ Else as well as Composers at Play and On the Scene San Francisco/Oakland. Many high schools and colleges have performed Baba’s original big-band compositions. Baba has been featured in the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra [California Jazz Conservatory] as a guest conductor. He has also been commissioned by Idaho State University (2020), Viewpoint High School (2018), West Ranch High School (2016), and most importantly for Marigold (Baba’s S).
