Three Voices is Kim Pensyl’s flugelhorn and Rusty Burge’s vibraphonist, Michael Sharfe’s bass player. Although it’s not uncommon to see a trio with a vibraphone anchor, it’s a refreshing change from small, guitar- and piano-centered ensembles. The vibraphones add a light touch of harmonics to the performance and create an ethereal atmosphere to the music. These characteristics are magnified by the flugelhorn, which is not the trumpet. The bassist is responsible for time keeping, but all principles can have an influence on it. Allabout Jazz
