Tim Stine

Since 2008, Tim Stine, guitarist and composer, has been an active participant in Chicago’s jazz and improvised music scenes. Stine is a native North Dakotan who studied music at Minnesota State University Moorhead, CCM in Cincinnatti and CCM in Cincinnatti. He then moved to Chicago, where his unique compositional style and instrumental voice quickly became integral parts of the city’s well-respected progressive music scene. Stine is a bandleader and has focused his efforts on two projects where he plays acoustic guitarist: a trio featuring bassist Anton Hatwich, drummer Frank Rosaly, and a quartet consisting of Nick Mazzarella, Matt Ulery, Quin Kirchner, and alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella. These groups specialize in recording and performing Stine’s original music and have released albums through Astral Spirits (Tim Stine Trio and Trim Stine Trio (2016) and Clean Feed (Knots and Tim Stine Quartet 2019). Stine is a sideman and plays electric guitar. He has also contributed to many Chicago-based bands such as the Nick Mazzarella Quintet or the Jarod Bufe Quartet. Stine often collaborates with some Chicago’s most renowned improvisers, including Mike Reed, Matt Lux and Jason Roebke, as well as Josh Berman, the cornetist. Stine is a performer and co-curator for the Ratchet Series. This monthly concert series is currently held at Cafe Mustache in Chicago’s Logan Square. www.timstine.com
