Timo Vollbrecht, a saxophonist and composer who performs internationally, is also a reeds player. The New York City Jazz Record describes Timo as “luminously good”. His unique blend of emotional intensity, energy and spontaneity results in a sound that often evokes the feeling of flying. His roots are in Berlin’s vibrant music scene. He is located between New York City and Berlin. Fulbright scholar, he has a master’s in jazz saxophone at New York University, where he studied alongside Stefon Harris and Joe Lovano. He is currently working towards his doctorate in jazz composition and performance. He is known for his band Fly Magic, which combines elements of jazz, post-rock and minimalism with new music. Timo is well-known for his unique music writing and rich tone. He has won many awards and released numerous albums as both a leader or sideman. After having performed at the Festival International de Port-au-Prince, Branford Marsalis, a Grammy-Award-winning saxophonist, invited Timo to perform at Village Vanguard with his quartet. Timo has also worked with the legendary Kenny Werner and Randy Brecker and appeared on iconic stages like Jazz at Lincoln Center and Alice Tully Hall. Hot House, New York’s jazz bible, hailed him as “remarkable talent”. Timo has performed in over 30 countries across all continents during his active career. He performed with his bands at the Jazz Woche Burghausen and Danilo Perez’s Panama Jazz Festival, Festival International de Port-au-Prince(Haiti), Perth International Jazz Festival (Australia), and the Meta House in Cambodia. Timo and Keisuke Matsuno, his artistic partner in crime, had the rare opportunity to work with a magician at the Frontier Center Beijing China. He toured the Middle East and Asia for the Goethe-Institut (Germany’s global operating cultural institute), as well as Latin America, Asia, Latin America and Australia. He also performed with Robbie Williams, pop star and a member of the Echo Awards in Berlin. Additionally, he performed with Germany’s National Jazz Orchestra BuJazzO for Pina Bausch, the legendary dance choreographer. Timo Vollbrecht draws much of his inspirations from urban sounds and cultural diversity.
