Tito Carrillo

Tito Carrillo is one the most outstanding trumpeters from Chicago’s jazz trumpet heritage. He is a talented trumpeter, educator and bandleader as well as a composer. Since 1996, he has been an integral part of the Chicago jazz/latin music scene. He is a native of Austin, Texas. His impressive list of performers, recordings, and tours with artists is as diverse as his talent. Willie Pickens and John Moulder were his Chicago colleagues. He also worked with Dana Hall, Pat Barber, Ryan Cohan and Ryan Faddis. Recent performances included engagements with Grammy-nominated Cuban flutist Orlando “Maraca” Valle and Claudio Roditi (bombastic Brazilian trumpet player), Jackie Allen (vocalist/Blue Note recording artist) and the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. Carrillo has performed at some of the most important venues around the globe, including Chicago’s Symphony Center and Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, and London’s Royal Festival Hall. His music has been heard at jazz festivals around the world, including Telluride (Switzerland), Montreaux (Switzerland), and Finland. In his 14-year career, he has recorded more than 20 CDs and appeared on the concert DVD “Quincy Jones Live at Montreux 1996”. Tito Carrillo also has a passion for jazz education. He was appointed full-time professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign in 2006. Before his appointment at Illinois he was a faculty member at Northwestern University and Chicago College of Performing Arts. Through the Ravinia Jazz-in-the-Schools outreach program, he has also helped spread jazz awareness in Chicago’s inner-city schools.
